Interesting facts:
Once part of the ancient kingdom of Axum, Eritrea is one of Africa’s newest nations, having gotten its independence from Ethiopia in 1991 and having gained recognition by the international community on May 3, 1993. its leadership refused to hold elections since and it is in essence a dictatorship. Not only because the president Issias Afwerki refuses to hold elections; but because basic freedoms such as freedom of speech and of the press are non-existent. We hope that the current government of Eritrea will apply the same seriousness and desire for change in the area of elections that they have done in rebuilding their nation. Eritrea has made great accomplishments in the area of development, building roads, offering free healthcare and education. With the addition of freedoms and elections, it could be very close to paradise.
Eritrea has 3 of the largest ports in the Horn of Africa. The port of Massawa is remembered for its beaches and beautiful scenery by all who visit it. Along with Egypt and Ethiopia holds one of the longest traditions of Christianity in Africa.
