Mama knows that kids are important. It might sound silly when people tell you that you are the future; but its true! The future of Africa depends not only on African children; but on children all over the world.

If kids can learn more about the many great things Africa has to offer, maybe the future will be better for Africa and Africans.

That is why Mama Afrika has a Kids' Corner where you can go and learn more about Africa and Africans. Just click on the lion if you want to go there.

Large Barkcloth Wallet from Uganda

Bark Cloth Wallets

Bark cloth is made from the bark of fig trees. Don't worry though, because the trees are not cut down to produce the cloth. The bark is stripped from the tree and then the ladies wrap the tree with banana leaves for a few days. They then return to cover it with cow dung which remains there until the rain removes it. By that time, the tree has already grown new bark.

After working the bark to thin layers and drying it in the sun, it is ready to be sewn into these beautiful wallets and decorated with scenes of Africa. Neat huh?

You can find other items made with bark cloth by going to the special items stand. Click here to visit that stand.

Child's necklace with cowry

Child's play

Necklace with a shell detail makes a wonderful gift for either a boy or a girl.

In ancient times shells like the cowry shell were used as a form of currency. People used to trade with them the way that we trade with coins and bills today.

Mama suggests this necklace for younger children or older ones with a thin frame.

These bracelets are handmade by the Krobo people of Ghana. When the ladies there make their jewelry for a ritual called Dipo, they make a few extras for Mama Afrika. You'll have a little piece of Ghana on your wrist. What a nice way to remember of Africa.

Our travel version is easy to play in the car or on the go...

Here is a beautiful collector version of the game ...

Owale Game (also known as Mancala)

Gather your friends and pop some popcorn. Now get your new Owale game and play for hours. Its a nice change from the usual board games!

This is a game that many of you learn now in school, so you might already know one of the ways to play. But just incase you don't know how to play... or if you are interested in learning a new way to enjoy your board, Mama Afrika includes a set of rules that are used in Ghana.

Your board is carved by artisans in the Ashanti region of Southern Ghana. You will also get little seeds which are used locally to play Owale. But one kid suggests that you use jelly beans and let the winner eat them all. Mama Afrika will let you decide.

The beauty of the African family

Hand sewn dolls from Uganda, traditionally dressed. The family is made up of a mother, father and little girl.

The mother is wearing her best dress. No woman in Uganda would dress in anything but this if she were attending a wedding or other major festival. Traditionally this dress would be made up of 6 meters of fabric and would be wrapped numerous times around the body. Sure sounds heavy to Mama!! But her friends in Uganda assure her that its comfortable to wear and that the women there look absolutely stunning when all dressed up like that. The mom doll is of course wearing her best jewelry as well.

The male doll is dressed in a long tunic with pants underneath. All of the clothes are hand-sewn.

Lastly, is the little girl who is dressed up in her brightly colored dress and a simple pair of earrings. You are sure to love her braids!

These gorgeous dolls are not intended for play. They are for decorative or collection purposes.
