In the heart of northern Ghana's Bolgatanga region are a group of women whose works you simply must see! Progressive Women's Association is a cooperative of women who live in the poorest area of Ghana, the Upper East Region.

In order to make up for the difficult living conditions and lack of income during the dry season, caused by drought, these women are creating beautiful things so that they can continue to care for their families. About half of the families in the Upper East Region depend on their crafts to support them through this hard time of the year.

Thanks to the ladies at P.W.A you can bring a little of the wonderful Ghanaian culture into your home. You should have no problem finding their works since their products are featured in virtually every section of Mama's site.

Mama loves these women and their work. Thanks to the ladies' hospitality in welcoming Mama Afrika into their lives, you are now able to appreciate their work, while helping them continue to live their lives in dignity.

The Progressive Women's Association allows the Gurune people to share thier culture and helps educate youth and villages about a variety of issues. Here, people are gathered to watch the theater group perform.

The women's art works range from traditional games like Owele (a game played across Africa), to beautiful traditional clothing, as well as accessories and basketry.

P.W.A's members are working hard to improve their living situation, as well as to share their Gurune culture. Your donations will help them with the following projects:

  • Education programs concerning health and sanitation
  • Financial and home management training of members
  • Establishment of tree nurseries
  • Community education concerning the need for tree planting
  • Construction of ancient Gurune house for education and cultural uses
  • Providing youth with scholarships for apprentice programs
