These baskets are a fabulous example of how fair trade helps people and the planet! These bowl style baskets are handmade in Uganda. The women that make them use all natural dyes which means no chemical pollutants for their environment. It also makes them safer for your family. (No tainted Chinese paint here!)
Secondly, the majority of the plant sources for the dyes which they use are also medicinal. So, the plants are also able to heal their families. Thus, one plant provides for their families in a multitude of ways: first a woman grows it as a food source (millet for example is a staple food crop in East Africa). Then she sells part of her crop to the women who weave these stunning baskets. And, the women use some of the same plants used to make these baskets to heal their family members when they are ill. Talk about recycling!
Therefore, each sale of a basket ensures that the sustainable, local growing continues and the local population is less likely to depend on outside sources of grains to feed themselves. After all, their crop now provides the raw material for these baskets in addition to feeding them and ensuring that they are less likely to depend of expensive pharamacutical solutions. Nope, it just doesn't get any "greener" than this!
